Masterclass | Mamilien DASAZ

Maximilien Dazas is an exceptionally talented multi-instrumentalist, specializing above all in percussion. First prize winner of the 2003 National Competition for Young Musicians, and a multiple graduate of the CRR de Tours and the Haute École de Musique de Genève, he excels in mastering all classical and contemporary repertoires. He frequently works with Ensemble 0, Dedalus, Ensemble Contrechamps, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestre National de Lyon and Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, among many others, under the baton of prestigious conductors such as Charles Dutoit, Marek Janowski , Peter Rundel, Leonard Slatkin, Arie Van Beek, ...

At the same time, Maximilien Dazas has developed his personal approach to percussion with original creations, notably with the No-Mads Duo, mixing multi-percussion installations, real-time electronic processing, electronic music and drums. He has just recorded the music for Denis Poracchia's documentary "D'eau et de lumière", to be released in April 2018. Also forthcoming is a CD of contemporary compositions on a Balinese gamelan on the Mode Records label (Eklekto/0), as well as a collaboration with Thomas Meadowcroft and the Eklekto collective "Discount minimal".

For almost ten years, he has been studying Indian tablas under the aegis of his masters, Claude Gastaldin and Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. Passionate about teaching, he is a frequent speaker at various events, and co-author of the "Rythmic Touch" method based on Indian metric systems. This never lets him forget the accordion, the instrument of his childhood, which he never fails to incorporate into his work.

Combining the full range of his talents as a performer with those of a composer, arranger and improviser, Maximilien lives by and for music as others breathe. It's this breathing, human and humble, that we perceive in his music, whatever the instrument or repertoire. Maximilien Dazas is currently percussionist with the Vortex ensemble, and accompanies singer Nyna Loren.
